What we are Learning Friday!

Exodus 19-20:17 Deuteronomy 34

Verse of the Day: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.
Mark 12:30

Thursday's Highlights!

VBC’s 4th and 5th graders spent time this week volunteering at Harvester’s, one of Kansas City’s largest food banks. Some campers packed food, some campers had dish washing duty; and some loaded food. All of them made a difference!

C3 Missions – We’ve raised $6,732 to date for the Kids COR House of Hope – a home to be built for ten children and their “Mama” in Uganda. Our goal was $6,000 plus a generous supply of school supplies and backpacks. This total does not include Friday’s offering and we have already reached our goal!
End of Thursday totals:
Money:
$6,732
Backpacks: 270
Crayons/Markers: 571
Scissors/Glue: 536
Pencils/Pens: 4,421

More on Moses – Campers witnessed the reenactment of God opening up the Red Sea for Moses in drama Thursday. It was a lesson for us to trust in God, just as Moses did. Friday, God delivers the Ten Commandments to Moses. It will be earth shaking. Just like the real thing. We’d expect nothing less from our drama team who does an excellent job of bringing Bible stories to life. A standing ovation for performances well done.

Campers brought their stepping stones home that they made in Craft. Parents take a close look – the Ten Commandments are an integral part of the design. Children also decorated their very own Bible Tote bag.

Overheard in the classroom this week: “Kids, if you can sit quietly and keep your hands to yourself, Indiana Jones may come back tomorrow.” Indiana ”Illinois” Smith and his buddy Sam certainly sparked interest in our Biblical stories.

Getting 1,200 children to the right classrooms, making sure they are safe, designing a meaningful curriculum to teach children about Moses and the Ten Commandments, all while having fun is not an easy task. Thank you to Gail Gunnerson and her team who do an amazing job with VBC. Gail is too humble to take any credit and would want us to give the credit to the volunteers. We’ll do that too. A special thank you to our many volunteers who helped make this camp possible for over a thousand kids of all denominations.

In an informal survey, campers were asked what their favorite part of VBC was. The answers included the proverbial: “drama,” “music,” “making the stepping stones” and “rec.” But there were a few surprises such as: “the blood” (don’t worry moms, it was part of drama and the Plagues), “tipping over in my chair” (hmmm), “that only baby boys had to go in the river” (yes, the answer was from a girl) and lastly “the hot chocolate.” (Did we have hot chocolate?)

It’s a Wrap - Treasures of the Nile: History reenacted…learning God’s rules to live by…new songs to sing and dance to…memories made…memories shared. Thanks for making VBC 2009 a great success.

What we are Learning Thursday!

Story of the Day: Parting of the Red Sea and Manna from Heaven
Exodus 14, 16
Theme of the Day: Rely on God and trust in Him
Verse of the Day: "Trust in the Lord with all our heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight."
Proverbs 3:5-6

Wednesday's Highlights!

It’s More than Just Goldfish Crackers - Good chefs serve a good meal; great chefs serve a great meal and a story that goes along with it. And that’s exactly what our snack helpers have been doing for VBC campers. Starting with baby Moses in a basket (teddy grahams laid safely inside of chips)…the burning bush (red frosting with pretzels)…the plagues (popcorn with gummy flies and frogs) and today, the Red Sea (Red licorice and goldfish.) It just doesn’t get any yummier for kids.

We’re Getting Closer: C3 Missions – Our goal is to raise $6,000 for the Kids COR House of Hope in Uganda. Thanks to VBC campers who have helped raise $3,379. We’re also very grateful for the donated backpacks, school supplies and gifts for the mamas that care for these kids. Please dig deep for that spare change. Campers’ pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and dollars are making a big difference.
Wednesday End of the Day Totals:
Money:
$3,379
Back Packs: 204
Crayons/Markers: 425
Scissors/glue: 449
Pencils/Pens: 3,145

The Plagues Came to Drama - VBC’s Indiana “Illinois” Smith returned to help campers discover how Moses warned the Pharaoh of forthcoming Plagues if he didn’t do the right thing and let the Israelites free. The evil Pharaoh remained evil. And the Plagues came, and kept on coming, bringing smelly frogs, locusts, dead livestock, and boils. What a sight to be seen.

Today was the Real Soaker - The rains may have come and gone, but campers were still getting wet. Thanks to some creative water relay races such as putting a soaked football jersey on and wet sweatpants and then running 25 yards to the finish line. Some kids were more game than others. But everyone had their fair share of water.

Camper Tunes for Everyone – Doesn’t matter if you like country, jazz, hip hop or rock, we’re betting there’s not a camper that isn’t humming one of the VBC songs this year. You can download the songs right off the VBC blog, or purchase a Phil Joel CD at the Well Book Store.

Day 3-Wednesday's Lesson

Story of the Day: The Plagues
Exodus 7:1-6, 7:13-10:29
Theme of the Day: Listen to God & Obey
Verse of the Day: Obey me, and I will be your God and you will be my people. Walk in all the ways I command you, that it may go well with you.
Jeremiah 7:23

Tuesday's Notes & Missions Totals

C3 Missions Update: We want to provide ten Uganda children and their “mama,” who cares for them, with a home to live in. Thanks to your help we’ve collected enough for two children, but seven kids still need your help. Your child’s pennies, nickels, quarters and dollars will help us reach our goal of $6,000 for the Kids COR House of Hope.

Here are our Missions totals as of end of the day Tuesday:
Money: $1,953
Backpacks: 141
Crayons & Markers: 337 boxes
Scissors & Glue: 341
Pencils & Pens: 2,585
Misc: 174

Drama: It may have been wet and wild outside, but inside drama was on fire. VBC’s “Indiana Jones,” who incidentally has quite the VBC fan club, and his loyal friend Sam helped us discover a new story…God speaking to Moses through a burning bush. Guess you had to be there to really appreciate how good our costume makers are!
The Ten Commandments – If your campers were a little nicer, listened a little better and cleared their plates after dinner, you have Jordan, Gabby and, of course, God to thank. You see, one of the Commandments campers learned today was “Honor Your Mother and Father.”
Craft – Cement, water, rocks and pebbles. Mix it all up and you have some very creative campers. They worked hard on making garden stepping stones today. The stones include the Ten Commandments and each camper’s name. Thanks to the craft volunteers who were brave enough to help campers with this very fun, but messy project.
Rec – The rain wasn’t the only obstacle today. VBC’s outdoor obstacle course was moved inside. And what a race it was!
Music & Dance – Your camper is likely walking around singing “Boom Chaka Laka.” If you’re wondering why, it’s one of our VBC songs that they’ll likely never forget and won’t want to. It’s all about God filling us up with his love.

C3 Missions Update-Tuesday

Wow! Thank you for your donations. We collected $531 on our first day, and our VBC missions cart has started to fill up with needed school supplies and backpacks. Your child’s pennies, nickels, quarters and dollars will help us reach our goal of $6,000 for the Kids COR House of Hope.

God Call Moses & God Calls You!

Today we learned that God called Moses and God calls us, but how does God call us?? Check out this fun video we showed to the 4th & 5th Graders to get the conversation going!

Note from our friend Joey to the Children in Uganda

Hi guys. This is your friend Joey. I live in Belton, MO. My church is trying to get you things so that you will be safe. I helped too. I brought in a couple of dollars so we can build you a home.

Thinking of you,
Your friend, Joey

ps. God loves you all.

Tuesday's Lesson

Verse of the Day:
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
Jeremiah 29:11

Message of the Day:
God has a plan for you

Story of the Day:
Burning Bush and Aaron
Exodus 3:1-4:20

VBC Music & Dance!

Our campers may not make the finals of Dancing with the Stars, but they’re learning pretty darn good moves…as well as some awesome VBC songs.

Latest Rec update

It was an outrageous obstacle course today for campers…racing while carrying a ball on a spoon, balancing a basket on top of a plunger and dribbling a basketball – with your feet. If that wasn’t enough, there was the caterpillar crawl race. (We try hard to wear out your camper for you!)

The Ten Commandments

Your campers are well on their way to learning the Ten Commandments. And we’re betting it’s a far more fun and exciting way than when we adults learned them. Thanks to two young women, Gabby and Jordan, who have added motions and a catchy jingle to help us remember all Ten Commandments. There is a video below of the movements your child is learning!

Monday's drama

If your camper came home and said they saw the real life Indiana Jones, they were partially right…it’s actually VBC’s version of Indiana Jones. We call him Illinois and he introduced campers to the Bible story of the greedy Pharaoh forcing the Israelites to send their first born sons up the river. Moses’ mother, however, sent him in a basket down the river and he later was saved by the Pharaoh’s daughter. Our baby Moses was a rather large baby but nevertheless still pretty darn adorable!
