No Detail Unnoticed!

Typically there are three things VBC campers get really excited about: "celebrity" appearances (this year it was Luke Heaven Walker and R2D2), inflatables in rec, and, leave no doubt, the snack. There are many creative volunteers who help prepare the games and the snacks, which incidentally are tied to the Bible stories. Snack on Tuesday was VBC's version of a light saber...pretzel sticks with frosting...on Thursday it was whale crackers and gummy snakes, reinforcing the lesson of Paul's shipwreck and his encounter with a viper. Ahhh, those volunteers are always thinking of ways to teach our campers!

It was a Cast of Characters!

This week campers witnessed Saul, Paul, Ananias, Barnabas, Bar-Jesus, Silas, sailors, and solders on stage. The sets, the costumes, the scriptwriting, and acting all deserve a standing ovation. The Bible stories were wonderfully acted out and reinforce what the kids learned in their VBC classes. Thanks to the drama folks for all of their dedication in teaching the importance of Christ in our lives.

So Long, Farewell

This week was an amazing journey: the conversion of Saul to Paul, false prophets, earthquakes, shipwrecks and vipers. Every story arrived at the same conclusion: God triumphs over evil. Thanks to the hundreds of volunteers who made the camp a success. May the Christ be with you!

Don't Say Goodbye to the Lads, Say Hello

You may have noticed in the church building this week there's a number of people humming the songs they learned at VBC. Perehaps your own camper jumps in the car and belts out a few notes from Cable Knit Sweater. This upbeat fun music is from a Christian band called The Lads. Their CD can be purchased at the Well Book Store. Ask your camper to teach you a few of the songs and dance moves - you won't be disappointed.

Thursday's Missions Totals

Today, our campers brought in another $3,090.28 for children's beds in Haiti. The brings our total to $7,604.75!

Also, we collected another 2,134 books bringing the total to 5,449!

WOW!

This Little Light of Mine, I'm Going to let it Shine

VBC campers are making night lights this week at camp. Check out what they look like. Thanks to our craft volunteers who worked hard preparing the materials ahead of time and helping the kids make their VBC crafts. In 4th and 5th grade, the kids made friendship bracelets and bookmarks for mission's projects. Pre-K - 3rd grade also made gift bags for the Hope Center.

5,449 Books Donated by Campers (includes Thursday totals)

"It is not true that we have only one life to lead; if we can read, we can live as many more lives and as many kinds of lives as we wish." - S.I. Hayakawa
There are thousands of kids in Kansas City who have never gotten to hold their very own book in their hands. Thanks to the help of our campers, we are changing that. Donations of new or gently used books are pouring in! Keep up the great work.

VBC 4th & 5th Graders Help at Harvesters

Buses transported our campers to Harvesters, a Kansas City community food network. The kids helped stack, store, and prepare the food. They learned a few things along the way...such as when one or two eggs are broken in a carton, the grocery store ships them to Harvesters where volunteers wash the good eggs and repackage them for food banks. Harvesters provides food to over 66,000 people in the local area.

Special Galactic Visitors Visit VBC

Luke Heaven Walker and R2D2 have been making special guest appearances. They visit daily with over 1,300 campers anxiously awaiting their arrival in the sanctuary. They, too, watch Paul as he makes his journey, proclaiming the good news of Christ! The kids are learning that Paul's journey is difficult, but God is always watching over him.

It's a little Russian; It's a Little Hip Hop

Whatever you call it, VBC is using a catchy jingle and dance to teach our campers the Fruit of the Spirit. They are not...bananas, watermelon or mulberries...but they are Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self-Control. Ask your little rapper to recite them. You'll be impressed!

Day 3 Pics

Day 3 Missions Totals!

We collected $1,899.84 today for children's beds in Haiti - bringing us to a total so far of $4,514.47!

We collected 1,643 more books today for KC kids - bringing us to a total so far of 3,315 books!

Wee Hoo VBC Campers - you are the best!

Campers Travel Around the World

If your VBC camper comes home tired, you'll now know why. They've been on a whirlwind journey with Paul this week. First, they witnessed the transformation of Saul into Paul. Next it was Paul and Barnabas traveling from city to city to spread the good news of Christ. The two encounter Bar-Jesus, a false prophet, who tries to deceive people into believing what he says. But once again, good triumphs over evil and Bar-Jesus is struck blind by God. Paul continues on telling people about Christ. With earthquakes in the near future, the journey will be anything but dull!

Dancing with the Stars; Singing with the Lads

VBC's dancing stars are teaching our campers the latest dance moves to the music from The Lads. The Lads, a Christian band, hail from New Zealand. They are a household name in New Zealand and in May began filming their second season of a TV sitcom - about three guys wanting to start a band. Their CD is available for sale at the Well Book Store.

Go to Sleep Little Darling

Tonight when you're tucking your camper into bed, take a moment to notice their cushy pillow, the soft mattress, and the sheets and blankets that keep them warm. Around the world, orphans are sleeping on dirt or cement floors, on beds falling apart and on mattresses which are no longer sanitary. Sweet Sleep, with help from our donations, is changing that with a goal of "A bed for every head". Sweet Sleep works in Haiti, Africa, and Moldova. Our donations will go to children in Haiti.

Check out some pics from Day 2 of Vacation Bible Camp!

Tuesday's Missions Totals!

Today our kids collected $2,151.39 for children's beds in Haiti bringing us to a total so far of $2,614.63!

We also collected 776 more books for KC kids bringing that total to 1,672!

Just heard a story about 5 year old Lucia who slept on the floor last night to see what it was like for the millions of kiddos who don't have a bed. When she woke up in the morning she collected a bunch of change around the house and brought it to VBC for our mission project! WOW! Anyone else have a story about how the mission project is impacting your kiddos?

Thanks kids and parents!

It's Complicated

It's not easy explaining to children how Saul turns into Paul. So, VBC borrowed from the Star Wars trilogy to make sense of it all. Just as Anakin Skywalker turns to the dark side and becomes Darth Vader (who later does a 360-thanks to the Force of his son Luke) so goes our Bible story. Saul and his evil ways are defeated by the Force of Christ and he becomes Paul. Paul experiences an amazing, exalting journey as an apostle of Christ, and our campers get to witness it first-hand this week through stories, drama, and music.

A Day in the Life of a VBC Camper

A camper's day begins with a class prayer, followed by a Faith Wars communique', delivered via video. Today it was a message from our very own VBC Princess Leia. The campers head to drama and music, then back to the classroom for story time. When the lesson is done, kids go to rec or craft. Always, there is a delicious snack. After all, all good Padawans need to be rewarded.

We collected 896 books for kids in our KCK, KCMO, and Olathe schools.
Thanks VBC campers!

We have arrived!

A long, long time ago, actually, it was last fall, in a galaxy, not so far away, the VBC committee began planning 2010 Vacation Bible Camp. This dedicated group has ensured every detail in the Galatic, err, the camp, is ready: Bible stories, a weeks' worth of drama and music, crafts, recreation, and snacks. The mission is to help your youngling become a great warrior for Christ. Thanks to this group for creating the exciting week ahead of us!

Let the games begin!

George Lucas worked hard to turn out six Star Wars films, but our own version of Jedi Knights, (the VBC teachers) worked hard yesterday to prepare their classrooms. The drama sets are complete, the costumes are sewn, the lessons are written, and the teachers are here! The doors have opened for over 1,300 campers. May The Force be with all our volunteers!
